UH Goes to the MATCH

Houston, TX- University of Houston Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts School of Theatre & Dance presents “UH Goes to the MATCH” on Sunday, March 3, 2024. “UH Goes to the MATCH” consists of an eclectic night of dance produced, choreographed, and performed by UH School of Theatre & Dance students and faculty.

“UH Goes to the MATCH” features work representing the UH dance program at the upcoming American College Dance Association South-Central annual conference in Austin, TX. Zuri Humphrey presents “Modern Day Machine,” an upbeat contemporary funk quartet inspired by an indie rock song from 2008. “Modern Day Machine” centers around industrialism and how it has contributed to the monotony of everyday life for working class people. Humphrey uses comedy, sensuality, and synchronicity to accentuate the contrast between repetition in life and breaking out of the mold. “Retired Workaholic” by Allé Holloway is an energetic hip-hop contemporary fusion piece that focuses on the forced expectation to always chase the American Dream. The piece prompts the question, “What does one do after the goal is met?” Assistant Professor Travis Prokop showcases “Ball Moderne,” a work celebrating Underground Ballroom Culture and the creation of House music. Prokop draws inspiration from David Mancuso and Frankie Knuckles to combine elements of Ballroom Culture such as voguing and house dance with contemporary dance movements. The educational, inclusive, and entertaining work will engage the audience while also showcasing the technical and athletic prowess of the University of Houston Dance Department.

University of Houston Kathrine G. Solel International Commissioned for Houston’s First Augmented Reality Mural

Neighborhoods are looking to conceptualize their vision for the future as inclusive communities and cultural destinations. Solel international made his debut with his first large-scale Mural depicting the history of the historic independence Heights as the first municipality To be incorporated by African-Americans in Texas.

In 2018, Solel international made its debut with its first large-scale mural approximately 50 ft by 34 ft on the Whole Foods 365 building on the intersection of Yale and 610 freeway.

However, with neighbors with history as layered and as rich as theirs, a large-scale visual piece was not enough. Solel International took it a step further by helping to tell the story in the palm of your hands Using augmented reality thanks to its long-standing partnership with the Uncover Everything App.

To achieve this vision, Solel International went through a rigorous process through a call for Artists. We presented a visual representation for a sketch but also a demo of the augmented reality software we would incorporate with the mural. The project was led by Moorish-American artist Danny Asberry El, Craig Carter, Jajah, Jeff McCollum Campbell, the Uncover Everything App, ZinkNashly in partnership with Whole Foods 365, Charnele Brown actress from the renowned series “A Different World”, Home Depot, and Lowe’s.

In the beginning, we just wanted to Create a 4-dimensional experience for the patrons of the Independence Heights area, but in hindsight-what, what the organization did not know is that history was made with this augmented reality mural.

Ancient Handcraft in Modern Life

Our chat with the emerging designer brand based in Guatemala, Central America:

Q: Jaspe Maya-that is a rather unique name…can you tell us a little more of where that comes from so potential new clients in the USA can get to know you a little more ?

A: Jaspe is the beginning of a Guatemalan artisan textile called “Corte”. These textiles are our key pieces for the function of our creations. With the first knot of this canvas a story begins to weave along the loom, which tells us about love, culture, passion and admiration for life, depending on the artisan who is doing it. Each textile is created by hand for several weeks. This is how we feel about Guatemala and this is how the name Jaspe Maya was born.

Q: We see that there are a lot of beautiful colors and authentic artisanal work in your designs, where does that come from-what is the history of that?

A: The main inspiration for our designs is love; each one of these colors, of these details is carefully chosen and placed with such care that it immerses you in its magic and you feel that you are using a piece of art, culture and ancestral history of Guatemala.

Q: Who is the creative designer behind this brand?

A: Our Designer is Victoria Murga @vitto.collection is a woman, a passionate mother of art and fashion. She has more than 15 years of experience. She feels great respect and pride for life, nature and believes that Jaspe Maya Moderno exists to the help of Guatemalan women.

Q: How would you describe the style to customers encountering your work for the first time?

A: Urban Chic designed for today’s woman.

Q: We saw your work on Guatemala Fashion Week in November 2019 which is a great production! Congratulations! What is next for you in terms of projects for 2021?

A: Thank you very much, this is a collection designed for the multitasking and multiarea women that we are all now. We want to help the planet, we want to be comfortable, we want to look unique, we want to feel beautiful, we want to be bold, and we want it not to be so expensive. We also want to help others. Jaspe keeps this promise of help. Our commitment is to increase sales, in order to generate employment in Guatemala and to empower artisan women who live off their hands. We make you feel all of this. We want virtual stores and alliances in chain stores.

I NEED YOU LIVE is Eclipse the Earthstar’s message to the world. Being a military veteran, teacher, and artist, he knows the many levels despair and love may offer. As a well-traveled entertainer, he has learned to see the world in all of its lenses through his music and the universal messages he gives.

Thinking to end it all at one point in his life, he overcame these thoughts years ago only to find that recently his close friend and also veteran contemplated suicide. With quick action and persistence, he got through to his friend by saying these five words, “ I Need You to Live.”

In these colorful and uncertain times “I NEED YOU TO LIVE” is the anthem that will last for generations to come.

The Moorish American Singer sings about suicide prevention, love, and more. Tune in. More life is yet to come.
